Houston Rockets May Have Already Made A Decision On Dwight Howard’s Future

The Houston Rockets had entered this past season surrounded with plenty of high expectations following their first appearance in the Western Conference Finals in nearly 20 years. However, they fell far short of that nearly missing the playoffs entirely and had fired head coach Kevin McHale early in the season. The front office appears to already have turned a page on that disastrous situation with the recent hiring of former Phoenix Suns head coach Mike D’Antoni.

This is a decision that could have a large immediate impact on the franchise starting with former All-Star center Dwight Howard. The 30-year-old is expected to become an unrestricted free agent this upcoming offseason in hopes of cashing in on what could be his last max contract. The addition of D’Antoni may have put a huge wrench in the Rockets’ plans to re-sign Howard given the well-publicized turmoil that the two experienced together in their lone season with the Los Angeles Lakers.

It’s a well-known fact that D’Antoni doesn’t like using his big men in the post, which was Howard’s biggest gripe with his offense. All of this makes it hard to believe that the former three-time Defensive Player of the Year will want to go through that experience once again. Ultimately, what this make quite clear for Howard is that leaving Houston is now a near certainty.
