One Team Is Poised To Join the Kevin Durant Sweepstakes

With the Oklahoma City Thunder now out of the playoffs, the attention has immediately shifted toward Kevin Durant’s pending free agency. There’s expected to be several teams that will make a strong push to land the seven-time All-Star. According to Jeff Schultz of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Atlanta Hawks can be added to this list.

The Hawks, led by owner Tony Ressler, are expected to make a strong push for Durant. A front line with Durant, Paul Millsap and Al Horford would make the Hawks an immediate title contender, regardless of what decisions they make in the backcourt with Jeff Teague and Dennis Schroder.

The Hawks have pursued other big-time free agents in the past such as Dwight Howard a couple of offseasons ago but that didn’t get further than their interest in him. If Atlanta wants any essence of a legitimate shot at landing Durant, the front office must find a way to re-sign their own prized unrestricted free agent in All-Star center Al Horford. What may make things difficult in that regard is that Horford is reportedly aiming to get a max contract, which is something that the front office may be unwilling to offer.

Even with all that in mind, there’s a slim chance that the former league MVP decides to sign with the Hawks. There are other more viable landing spots such as the Thunder, Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, and Miami Heat. The odds may be stacked heavily against Atlanta but there’s no harm in them putting a strong effort forward.
