Paul Pierce Has A Suggestion For What Celtics Should Do With No.1 Draft Pick

The Boston Celtics had the ping pong balls bounce their way on Tuesday night by landing the top overall pick. It has put them in the prime position to take one of the top talents in this year’s draft class. However, former Celtics great Paul Pierce believes the team should trade the pick to acquire some veteran help, according to WEEI.

Speaking with ESPN on Wednesday, Pierce clearly believes it’s time for Danny Ainge to make another blockbuster deal.

“You trade this pick, because [Markelle Fultz] cannot help the Celtics get over the top,” Pierce told The Jump. “The window is now.”

“You’re a 50-win team, you’re the No. 1 seed. You have to build on this momentum,” said Pierce. “If you can acquire a Paul George, Jimmy Butler, or Gordon [Hayward] from Utah, you have to do it.”

The Celtics have already engaged in this route by considering trading the selection. The top players in this year’s draft are all backcourt players primarily at point guard. They already possess an elite player at that position in Isaiah Thomas.

The pick could be used as a big bargaining chip to acquire a player like Paul George or Jimmy Butler. This would allow for those teams to get a major piece to the puzzle in place of George or Butler. All in all, the Celtics have a plethora of options available to them and trading the pick is one that they will seriously think about.
