Spurs Have Decided On Kawhi Leonard’s Status For Game 4

Through the first three games of the Western Conference Finals, the Golden State Warriors have steamrolled to a commanding 3-0 series lead. Much of this has been down without the services of Kawhi Leonard for the Spurs. In light of that, the San Antonio Express-News is reporting that Gregg Popovich has decided against Leonard playing in Game 4.

“It wouldn’t make much sense,” Popovich said of playing Leonard in Game 4. “If he’s unable to play yesterday, I don’t think there’s going to be a miraculous healing by tomorrow.”

It has become quite clear that Leonard’s injury much more worse than originally anticipated. He has been unable to play in Game 2 and 3, which have both been blowout losses. With the Warriors closing in on another NBA Finals birth, it wouldn’t make sense to throw a less than 100 percent Leonard out there.

Popovich is looking out for his player’s long-term health, especially given that he reinjured his ankle twice in the same game. It goes much deeper than just sitting him for the Spurs as he is the face of the franchise moving forward. Jeopardizing his long-term health over a playoff game isn’t a route worth taking for the franchise.
