The primary focus this upcoming offseason in the NBA will be on what decision Kevin Durant will make in free agency. The former league MVP holds the future of the Oklahoma City Thunder in his hands. With that in mind, general manager Sam Presti appears to be well aware of the gravity of the situation.

“We’ll get an answer from him at the appropriate time,” Presti told reporters Monday. “I think it really is important for him to take his time, get away from things. Look, Kevin is a highly, highly intelligent person.

“He’s a mature person. He’s a rational person, and he’s going to work through the decision in a way that will help him do what he feels is best for him. We’ll react accordingly once we have that information, and we’ll try to be as prepared as possible.”

The Thunder know that they will have the chance to pitch their case to Durant at some point in the offseason. It’s a decision that will have a huge impact on rest of the 27-year-old’s career that should result in him taking his time to come to a clear choice. What could make matters more complicated for him is that there are several other viable teams such as the Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, Washington Wizards, and Miami Heat that are all reportedly interested his services.

Durant is coming off another impressive season finishing third in the league in scoring with 28.2 points along with posting a career-high 8.2 rebounds. This includes recording a career-best mark of 20-plus points in each of his last 64 regular-season games, which is the longest stretch in the NBA since Michael Jordan did so in 69 straight contests in the 1990-91 season. His strong play helped him finish fifth in the 2015-16 NBA MVP voting.
